A Man’s Neck Tie – A focus of men’s fashion

Picking out a man’s neck tie can be a confusing ordeal. Ties come in a myriad of different colors, designs and sizes. A man’s tie is the focal point of his wardrobe and choosing the best tie that fits his suit, personality or state of mind can be difficult.

These days men’s neck ties can be broken into three basic categories: Contemporary, Striped, and Solid. Contemporary ties include a vast number of styles including print, conversational and abstract designs. Striped ties are often regarded as a power ties, and a solid tie is considered a staple of any man’s wardrobe.

What Ties should I have?

Every man should have a solid black, gray, burgundy and navy tie. Combine these ties with a white dress shirt and it’s a classic look that will probably be around forever.

Don’t worry about selecting ties with the appropriate length or width. These variables are always changing depending upon fashion trends. Any men’s store you shop in will have the most current trends so it’s mostly a matter of choosing the color, material and design of the tie.

When choosing neckwear with patterns remember that the tie pattern is to complement the shirt, not compete with it. A dramatic shirt requires a quieter tie, while a subtly patterned shirt works well with a dramatic tie.

Before purchasing a tie you want to make sure it’s of good quality. Ties are made of various materials including silk, wool, polyester, or a combination of materials. Put the tie around your neck and knot it up. High quality ties will fall straight without curling. Inspect the tie closely and look for irregular weaves and loose threads. If you’re buying silk ties and it feels rough, that is an indication that the silk is of inferior quality.

If you still are unsure which tie to purchase look at the mannequins in the men’s stores and find a suit you can identify with or a salesperson that dresses the way you like and ask for some advice.
