Pratt Knot - The new knot on the block

When tying a Pratt knot, also known as the Shelby knot, you start off by turning the tie inside out before knotting the tie. This unorthodox way of knotting a tie was invented by Jerry Pratt, a United States Chamber of Commerce employee. His knot was introduced to the Neckwear Association in the 1980’s.

A tie knot with a twist!

Tying Pratt knots is easier than it looks once you get past the fact that you start off with the tie flipped around. The narrow end of the tie will stay inside out when the knot is completed unless you twist this end around to the correct side before tightening the tie knot. When completed the Pratt is a clean and fairly wide knot although it’s not as wide as the Windsor knot.

Okay let’s practice the Pratt knot. Stand in front of your mirror and follow the instructions below. Remember practice makes perfect knots!

1. Start with the tie inside out, end "A" under end "B".

2. Take end "A" over and under end "B".

5. Pull end "A" up behind and through the loop.

6. Bring end "A" through the knot and tighten. The tip of "A" should touch your belt buckle.

Were you successful with the Pratt Knot? Great! If not, keep trying. When completed, the ends of the tie should be of equal length or the wide end of the tie should be a bit longer than the narrow end.

Remember that if you don’t want the tie seam of the narrow end to show you must give it a half turn before knotting the tie.
